I made notebooks this weekend. Not bad, amirite? I colored every single intensely hued floral dot, saddle-stitched and added the finishing book binder's tape on each one. The blank black label are for custom text... I used a white gelly roll pen and just wrote "Lists" "Overheard Stories." It felt so handmade and my own. The next day I woke up at 6am, spread my notebooks on a blanket and I just looked at them as the sun rise. Making stuff makes you weird like that ;)

Happy New Year! Me and W just finished our vision boards, while watching Casablanca and right when it turned 2010 caught the neighborhood fireworks display through our gigantic windows with the rest of the city as its backdrop. Kind of low key compared to last year's New Year where me and W reupholstered our couch. Yea, I think we tried to welcome that New Year in sweat shop conditions.

So a couple of things that makes my heart a flutter.

A 2006 Valentino! Who cares if it's from 2006, looks every bit as fitting for 2010. Actually, I started poking around his older work after I watched Valentino: The Last Emperor and discovered some gorgeously sequined dresses, and I just had to see more. Next is this gorgeous bracelet by Sirikarn Jirajbhaskornkul and Supot Suwannasing from Thailand from their line Saprang .

Make a Fool of Yourself, It's Required

Words escape me... sometimes I would be all alone weeks or months later, replaying a strip of conversation, finally figuring what I really intended to say, wait no... a bit more fine tuning here. The gist being that I am hopeless in group social interactions.

So a gal my friend likes finally decided that she isn't into him. After a couple weeks of awesomely planned epic dates on my friend's part, it just doesn't work. Knowing how much heart went into planning the dates, I just tell him that "as long as you give it your all, there's nothing to regret." Another friend chimes in and says, "well isn't that worse? giving your all and then it doesn't work out?" I disagree, but my mind works funny. When someone tells me their opinion, immediately I am drawn to how their argument could be correct, it's my way of connecting. There it goes, words flit away, I live in my head with its multiple possibilities. So I didn't support my argument and in turn probably didn't help my friend much in feeling better.

A bit belatedly, this is what I wanted to say. No love is nothing. When you give it your all and things fall apart, you've still gained something. An understanding of your nature as a person, as a lover to another. With each chance, you learn to push. To push apart from this matchstick house misconceptions of romance that is force fed to you from all sides. And in pushing you'll feel yourself pull together, you'll figure out what suits you, you'll feel your boundaries. And one day it'll just click. You'll find the kind of love you know you deserved all along, just don't give up. It's okay to wear your heart out your sleeve. No shame in connecting with your inner crazy and volatility.

Sometimes I feel like I can write a Shakespearean sonnet about being broke, specially when I find gorgeous things that just stirs that tragic yearning, complete with outstretched arms and pained expression. Started with Mark Nicdao's photo in Mega Magazine showing Bea Valdes's gemstone-chockful jewelry, clutch, and vest designs. She is by the way another awesome Filipino designer.

Also, one of these days I will own an Antiseptic Fashion's corset which seems to conveys everything bad ass I'd ever want in leather, which is pretty much super model, sci-fi hero.

I took my homemade hearts gift wrapper out for a spin and packaged a present for my little sister. And you know what it feels good. I love Mama's Sauce for helping me find my paper and printing it. Inspired, I made cards going for that old perfume bottle, books, and lovers feel.

Making Pattern Prints

I'm really looking forward to printing more designs :) The beautiful people at Mama's Sauce print shop have been so amazing in helping me output my paper goods. Seriously just the best print shop in Orlando!

It is created off my program many moons ago and basically you input a polygon pattern and it will repeat it in different colors, transparency, and position on the paper. It is printed on 12 x 18 80lb. gloss text. It is on all white paper by the way, no black border, that is just the table.

I still have to work on the photography but here are some of them!

About Those Tanuki Testicles

It is not everyday you think to yourself in between fits of laughter, " I want these testicle woodblock prints!" Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) an ukiyo-e style master created a series of woodblock prints depicting tanuki (racoon dog typically part of Japanese folklore) and the funny ways of using their sizable testicles.

Found from Pink Tentacle, here are some of my favorites.

I have a drawer that resembles a soap museum. Wafting from it, deliciously, are subtle notes of perfumed bars, enticing me to use them. I don't. Instead, they rotate on closet drawers or finally given as hostess gifts, as it is really difficult for me to tear the packaging off. It's a bit backwards for me as I will make soap to package them. Here are some neat soap packaging.

Nostalgia Organics soaps wrapped in vintage-inspired fabric sacks; Soap and Paper Factory bars which also creates gift wrappers with the same design as the soap packaging. A very clever solution to my problem and hopefully more soap packagers would resort to this strategy.

Birthday Week

I'm so cheap, lucky, and indulging my narcissistic nature. Your eyes may glaze over what essentially is a list of past events from my birthday. So feel free to ignore this post completely.

Day 1- Me and W score a free $40 lunch from California Pizza Kitchen. They have this "Don't Open It" thank you card promo and we just happen to get a free lunch out of the card. On to Sephora to get free birthday lip glosses. I'm not a make up kind of gal, but Sephora definitely knows how to work that free-samples business model.
Day 2- Giant box of junk food arrives from my family along with customized trousers handmade for my size which is a first for me.

Day 3- My best friend sends me coupon in the mail. We are not so bad at being frugal.
Day 4- Me and W go to the Army Surplus Store and Skycraft to get inspired. Skycraft is an electronics shop in Orlando with extensive inventory, I included some shots. UFC match with friends.

Day 5- Free stickers from the library. They do it right and not a single logo is on the stickers, instead stickers focuses on adventures and creativity within books.
Day 6- Drawing like a crazy person, finished 5 that day and accomplished my goal of 20 drawings before my birthday.
Day 7- Replied to everyone's birthday wishes. Lunch with W and alot of driving around. W bakes a cake, tastes like cornbread, we think of how fat the pigeons will be tomorrow. Sephora's plan works, W (I picked) an eyeshadow kit which cost $22 and some really good free samples that included a 14 piece goodie bag for Father's Day in addition to three regular samples. In addition to those free lip glosses earlier during the week, I had a pretty killer loot.

I normally would not even write about this, but I am just in awe of all the extra goods I manage to acquire this week. I mean, through free goods, I am ready for Father's Day! This is our second attempt of a birthday cake.

1. This card makes me hope that Selena Wong creates a story involving this festive trouble filled scene.
2. Words cannot describe how enchanting these Lart Cognac Berliner + Little Otsu planners are in person. Whimsical flowers and foliage in unexpected colors. Upon close inspection you will find sense of humor, with people's limbs peeking in between petals. Straight up handwritten text and colored pencils as medium lends a handmade quality. If you feel as I do, you may just live it up a little so you can fill this little planner with bonafide adventures.
3. Tags that look like pins.
4. Catchy calligraphy which has that vintage coke days feel.
5. I like the hustle and bustle of the crowd, it reminds me of the market or a revolution.
6. The yellows are bright and just right for hellos.
7. Graphics on these coasters would work well for garden parties.
8. I am in love with this efficient card. Printed on double sides, one side is for you to personally fill out as creatively as you want and the other side gives you ideas on what to write in case you are lost for words.

Just a minute ago W was trying to impress me with his math skills. He says, "any number, give me any number to multiply with 11 and I will give you the correct answer." He can do it up to six numbers, pretty impressive huh? Yes, this is the best intro that I can think of. I am so mesmerized with Grant Hamilton's Geometries polaroid project that he's just taken my words with him.

I did a double take when I found this tea set on Louche Lab as months ago I discovered a tutorial on Apartment Therapy Re-Nest by Aya Rosen on painting your own tea set. As you can imagine, I was so excited to find out that she has a shop. Her line work is mesmerizing and I am just appreciative that she took the time to share her technique so we can all make one for ourselves.

and if you want to scandalize your guests as you serve them cookies the last dessert plate may just do the trick. I am kind of tempted to cover her bits with gum drops. Or serve a tea sandwich shaped like a dress.

Sweets for My Tweets

If you are finding yourself a little hungry for sweets lately, maybe it's because holiday makers have conspired and decided to hawk to us two sugary filled holidays for this month. Today is Doughnut Day and June is National Candy Month. So here are some candy and cake goodness.

Miette gets it. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Both her pastries and shop exude that approachable charm and it's really no wonder many brides consider this a staple resource for party favors.

Puccho, a Japanese candy that looks good from the outside and tasty on the inside. Originally discovered on now defunct blog PingMag , the adorable packaging has led self confessed cupcake ninja hello naomi to replicate all the cute characters in cupcake form. I want these pretty bad.

Sugar on sticks that will be the death of me, including popsicles beautifully packaged from Hokkyoku and colorful whirly pops from Dylan's Candy Bar. By the way if you live around Orlando, a good place for frozen treats is Jeremiah's Italian Ice.

Some macarons within your reach. When I was craving for macarons a while back, Paulette Macarons was specially accomodating and game for shipping in the U.S. It is not mentioned in their website but ask and maybe they would be still up for it.

Traci French is like a mini conglomerate slash machine. From her blog, flickr page, and etsy shop, you can tell from the numerous quality entries that everything she does she does with a lot of heart and grit. And I think if I stand next to these photos in a floaty dress I will match perfectly.

In an odd twist, here are two music tracks to go with the pictures. I am feeling a bit lovey as my lover and I watched that new Pixar film "Up" which has a love story bit, and later had Italian ice with the warm sun in our faces. Ha ha, I can feel some of you scrunching your faces and sticking a tongue at me. Right back at you.

Yet again one of my favorite goods. This is a wall decal by UNDOBOY currently sold on blik . I have this perfect room in my head with modern furnishings, exposed pipes, concrete walls and I look at this wall decal and just sigh at the perfectness of this design for my imagined dwelling. Know of any good vinyl sticker printers? I am itching to try out this tutorial on Computer Arts.

Anyway tomorrow, I'll be working on that shoe design to submit on Ryz, hopefully I'll be able to post that for you to see.

Sunday Peaches

I'm actually quite shy, and today I braved up a little and did something I've been wanting to do for a while. So with my drawing pad and 01 micron pen I walked around my neighborhood and sat on the pavement across one of my favorite homes here in Orlando. Okay I did not want to be shooed away or have residents freak out.

As with most fears, nothing of that sort happened. As I sat out shaded by a tree, a bit of rays causing a bit of sunburn on my foot, one of the residents in the house started strumming a guitar playing amazing Spanish music. Bikers and dog walkers were appreciative and best of all I had a random encounter with an old friend from another state! He just rolled down the window and yelled "Hey! By any chance is your name Vanessa?!" Sounds crazy no? But it's all truth I swear. I was so thrilled that I was jumping up and down and tried to pull B from his car's window.
Here is the house, I have yet to color.

And this is me enjoying my Sunday to the fullest :)

Well I am Filipino and there's no question about it, I love the Philippines! So here's me sharing you some Filipino love + eye candy.

These gorgeous banig or sleeping mats are made of buri. Popularly used if you are broke, hot, or want a better posture (which is my mother's reason for usage).

If you ever want to travel the Philippines, checking Anton Diaz's blog Our Awesome Planet will probably become one of your best resource for restaurants and festivals in the Philippines. I can already imagine myself feasting on some incredible Filipino treats at Cafe Juanita .

Lesley Mobo designed and created this enchantingly beautiful layered dress for his cousin, Charisse's wedding. You can find more of the lucky girl's dress photos here.

and our last feature is of furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue . He integrates locally sourced organic materials like rattan, abaca, bamboo, and buri with hand made production and weaving techniques. Many of his work remind me local Filipino aesthetic, and if you look around his site you will surely find one that looks like banig.

Woot, I am always excited finding these websites that lets you flex the design muscles. So fun and some are still in beta version, meaning you may just win.

Ryz lets you place your design on their shoes. Actually, I am most excited at the part where they place your design on a 3d model of a shoe, so everyone gets an idea how your shoe will look like :D

Minted believe it or not they are already having a Holiday greeting card competition. Wicked designers and good community.

I am over the moon! Found some amazingly innovative free services. One is Poladroids, which lets you create Polaroid like photos from your digital photos. I will now be fighting my impulse to Poladroid everything. Here's what I did with it.

Also found Mine Magazine. You pick 5 magazines and Mine will create for you a customized magazine with all 5 magazines' content and readers receive a new digital issue every two weeks for 10 weeks.

Just sharing the love as I am on a research phase again.

Random Updates All Rolled Into One

Classics for the summer! Me and W have checked out books that so far include texts written by authors Machiavelli, Voltaire, Tolstoy, Hobbes, Plath, Spinoza, Liebniz, Kierkegaard. I also threw in some Greek mythology. Any other suggestions?

So far, W is reading Candide-Voltaire and I am reading The Prince- Machiavelli. I've wanted to do this for a while. It's exciting as there is much to be learned from others that have explored quite deeply of their thoughts and the events surrounding them. If I can demystify even a little bit of what confounds me in life I would be just over the moon.

For my birthday I promised myself to create 20 designs. Let's hope that I can pull through and keep my birthday tradition alive. I will post it here for you to see on June 16. Yeeyyaa.

Very very soon I will be receiving my first commission check from Minted.com :) Also W's LottoBot seems to be doing well on iTunes.

Tomorrow is going to be crazy, announcing Wade's iPhone app LottoBot on several social networking sites, helping him embed a flash video on his website, and looking around the net for some places to post and announce his app. I also have to get started and design him some flyers and business cards. Once again I moved furnitures around so I can make my tokbox video have a more pleasant background. It was nuts, like some part time lighting expert, I did the three point lighting, with the sun behind me, an overhead lamp, and an assortment of floor lamps to one side. I even got props, and moved my plant with incredible disorderly branches behind me, created this flower pom pom out of tissue paper and hanged it on the ceiling, and added a well placed photograph to anchor the whole look. All for what I hope is the perfect video. Tsk, I am particular like that.

Program Love

My program is still a work in progress, and it makes me superbly happy that I can create shapes that in turn populate this other screen with the created shape in random color, positioning, and copied in multiples. Yes folks I have created a program that allows me to print unique giftwrappers everytime :) Created with vb.net, wpf, and XAML. First screenshot is when the user creates a shapes, second when the shape slowly populates the screen (it has a timer that adds a random number of shapes every second). This is when the program creates another pattern. The opacity makes the screen shots blurry looking, click each one to see the sharper version of the image.

You've Learned Well My Little Pad Won Sen

Well minted.com results came in today and one of my designs was an editors pick! The competition went from 400+ to 278. And out of 278 they picked 11 winners and 20 editor's pick. And I was one of the twenty! It's exactly the fuel I needed, just incredibly happy. One of these days guys, some of my work will be featured in a magazine and I will have a brand under my name. For now, toiling is where it's at!

Design Marathon

Phew! I just got done submitting some "thank you card" designs on minted.com. There is just something so exhilarating in making the deadline :) My heart is still racing. My pace is still slow, it takes incredible discipline not to overthink.

Tomorrow it will just be me and Wade, kayaking to the smaller islands.

More Adventures with LiveSurface, Photoshop, and Typography

I'm feeling a little breakthrough with my quest nourishing my curious creative soul. I am now drawing quicker, a little less pensive, a little less tentative with my strokes. I am working hard to match what's in my head, to let curiosities get the best of me, to reclaim some skills (yo) and to let discoveries pan out to completion. Part of this of course is having a similarly, amazingly, naturally, creative husband whom to share a quest with. A little sappy, yes.

So on a whim, after taking a little breather on a drawing, I tried LiveSurface. LiveSurface is pretty much this application that you can use that goes with Photoshop and Illustrator to help create that professional looking mock up. And it considers lighting, shadowing, and perspective giving that realistic look. I played with vanishing points, gradient overlay, and some embossing to use on a typography design that I did (which you can better see on the second box). Ignore random words on the box, I picked some from the many jumbled words in my head that very minute.

I tried 1. going for shiny black foil (looks more like felt?) 2. no techniques, just placement 3. mirrored foil 4. pop up card look ... Do you get that feel when you look at it? How can I make it better? Well goodnight!

I am always in search for snippets of rain sounds that loops well since it has been a surefire way in getting me to drift off seamlessly to sleep. I know there's more of you out there looking for the perfect rain sounds, here are two sites that I found that has been incredibly helpful.

Soundsleeping.com - No downloading required, set the knobs to the combination of sounds you want and it will last a whole night.

Freesound.iua.upf.edu - While you'll have to sign up for an account, when you're good and ready, you can download from an abundant resource of high quality audio samples.

I am trying my hand at decoding a found template's css/html in spanish! How about that huh? I am a little confused and curiously digging around to see if the navigational links in spanish corresponds to some other snazzy functions (e.g. there was a link called fotos which i changed to blog.. will it have corresponding photo code work or just place holders). These are questions I'd like to keep posted so I'd remember!
1. can I change the color of the long horizontal line? YES, but a little challenging.
2. can I switch to my logo? YES
3. what do the spanish words on the side bar mean :)? thank god for babelfish

2/12 Busy day. Learned how to add those social bookmarking codes, added content and links, researched, created my little slideshow, counter, translating to a different language and made a present for Wade's birthday. Yay. What a wonderful day. Tomorrow it's just me and my honey, celebrating, and after that I'll figure out to be more relaxed in writing. Need to make a logo to replace this flower.
